Ranger Suárez is currently almost perfect—forget unstoppable. Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies left-hander extended his pristine start to the season with yet another strong performance in the team's 5-2 victory over the Rangers. With a 1.36 ERA through ten starts, Suárez improved to 9-0 after pitching seven innings of one-run ball.
To put that in context, since Hall of Famer Juan Marichal in 1966, Suárez is the first pitcher to start 9-0 with a sub-1.50 ERA through 10 starts. Since earned runs were made official in 1912, just two other pitchers from the AL/NL have achieved this feat: Cy Falkenberg in 1913 and Hall of Famer Walter Johnson in 1912.
Suárez has an unbeaten record, but even without that, his 1.36 ERA through ten starts is the third lowest in the team's history. Through ten appearances, just Grover Alexander, another Hall of Famer, had a lower average, which he achieved in 1916 (1.24) and 1915 (1.31).
In his most recent performance, Suárez tied a career best with ten strikeouts against the reigning World Series champs. He gave up two walks and five hits.
When you consider that Suárez has only given up seven earned runs in 61 innings across those nine appearances, you can see why he is in exceptional position at this stage of the season. There are only eight other pitchers in AL/NL history to win nine games in a row with seven earned runs or less. Four Hall of Famers (Perry, Gibson, Spahn, and Wilhelm) and two additional two-time Cy Young Award winners (Snell and Santana) are among the eight pitchers on that list.
Although Suárez hasn't needed much run support this season, Harper undoubtedly contributed to keeping Suárez's winning streak intact. In the fourth inning, with the score knotted at one run apiece, the two-time MVP doubled and then scored the winning run on an Alec Bohm single. After, Harper hit a no-doubt home run to straightaway center, which turned out to be the game-winning run.
The Phillies are getting big hits and they're pitching well. They currently rank among the best teams in baseball right now.
