Bobby Witt Jr. made history Tuesday night as the first shortstop in Major League Baseball history to achieve multiple seasons with at least 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases. He marked this milestone stealing second base against the Detroit Tigers in the first inning.
Currently, the Kansas City Royals find themselves 2 1/2 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the top American League wild-card spot, while holding a 1 1/2 game lead over the Minnesota Twins for the second spot.
With the Royals positioned firmly in the AL wild-card race and still eyeing a fight for a division title, Witt's contributions have been pivotal in the Royals turnaround from last year's 56-106 season. He leads the majors with 200 hits, a .332 batting average, and 112 runs scored. If his numbers hold, Witt will join Nap Lajoie, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial and Rod Carew as the only players to lead in all three categories in a season. While Aaron Judge is having a historic season of his own, Witt's strong second-half might be enough to propel him into an MVP award.
Beyond his impressive stats, Witt has brought a contagious enthusiasm to the Royals, revitalizing a franchise that has struggled since winning back-to-back AL Pennants and a World Series title in 2014 and 2015.
After enduring three seasons with over 100 losses in a six-year span, the Royals are likely to achieve a postseason berth under second-year manager Matt Quatraro.
