Queens, New York — Following heavy storms that ripped through Queens on Thursday, the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers played their delayed opening day game today, March 29th. In the low scoring contest, the Brewers emerged victorious, 3-1.
The offseason departure of former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes, coupled with Brandon Woodruff sidelined for the season with a right shoulder injury, left 27-year-old Freddy Peralta with some big shoes to fill. In his first start as an ace, the right-hander impressed, ending his afternoon with a line of 6.0IP, H, ER, BB, 8K. Following the quality start, a bullpen trio of Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps, and Abner Uribe tossed a hitless seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. This game marks as the fifth one-hitter on Opening Day in MLB history since the expansion era in 1961.
Focusing in on the bats for the Brew Crew, former MVP Christian Yelich contributed the majority of the offensive success. The left-hander totaled three hits, as well as tacking on a solo home run over the head of Starling Marte in the fourth inning.
Even with Peralta and Yelich contributing standout performances, the day belonged to the highly anticipated MLB debut of the No.1 prospect in baseball, Jackson Chourio. Chourio, the youngest Brewer to start on Opening Day since hall-of-famer Robin Yount, wowed fans in all aspects. Manager Pat Murphy showed his confidence in the young star, slotting him in the leadoff spot. In his debut, the 20-year-old went 1-3 with an RBI and a walk. The rookie also stole a base, as well as made some remarkable track downs in rightfield.
Despite much attention on Chourio, the focus shifted in the top of the eighth inning. In his first game as a Brewer, first baseman Rhys Hoskins slid through the second base bag on a ground ball hit by Willy Adames, colliding with Jeff McNeil. The collision triggered a heated exchange between the two, prompting both benches and bullpens to clear. Although no punches were thrown, a lot of back-and-forth language was exchanged between ballclubs.
The two teams are set to meet again tomorrow, March 30th, at 1:40pm EST. Scheduled starters LHP DL Hall and RHP Luis Severino are set to debut for their new squads.
