In a disappointing turn for the Texas Rangers, All-Star shortstop Corey Seager is set to undergo surgery to address a sports hernia, a procedure that will prematurely end his third season with the team. Seager is scheduled to have the surgery on Friday, marking his second sports hernia operation in the past year.
The 30-year-old infielder was placed on the 10-day injured list on September 4 due to ongoing discomfort in his right hip, an issue that had been troubling him over the past month. This latest injury adds to a challenging year for Seager, who has been dealing with various ailments throughout the season.
The reigning World Series MVP had already faced setbacks earlier in the year, missing nearly all of spring training following a January surgery to also repair a sports hernia. Despite his efforts to return this season, Seager has acknowledged that he will need a full offseason to fully recover and prepare for the 2025 season.
On the field, Seager has been a crucial player for the Rangers, batting .278 with 30 home runs and 74 RBI in 123 games. This year marked his third consecutive season with 30 or more home runs since he signed with Texas in 2022. His leadership and offensive production will be missed as the Rangers finish up their underwhelming 2024 season.
Seager and the Rangers will now look ahead with the focus on his recovery and the 2025 season. The team will be hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Seager, who remains a key component of their long-term plans.
