NEW YORK — In a back-and-forth Game 5 at Yankee Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 7-6 to secure their second World Series title in five years. This win marked the Dodgers' first championship in a full season since 1988, and their eighth World Series in franchise history.
The game was anything but straightforward. Facing an early 5-0 deficit that forced Los Angeles to exhaust its bullpen, the Dodgers demonstrated offensive resilience against Gerrit Cole and eventually the Yankees bullpen.
In a surprising twist, it was starting pitcher Walker Buehler who stepped up to seal the victory, delivering a clutch performance when it mattered most. The Dodgers made history by becoming the only team to rally from a five-run deficit to clinch a World Series title.
First baseman Freddie Freeman etched his name into the record books, earning the World Series MVP title. Not only did he hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history during Game 1, but he also drove in 12 runs over the five-game series, tying a record set by former New York Yankee Bobby Richardson in 1960.
Mookie Betts also shone brightly throughout the series, becoming the only active position player with three World Series rings. His defense was on full display, particularly in Game 4, where he made an over-the-wall catch while battling with two fans attempting to snatch the ball from his glove. Betts capped off his series with a game-winning sacrifice fly against Yankees reliever Luke Weaver in the eighth inning, securing the decisive run for the Dodgers.
