On Tuesday, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages made his Major League debut, going 1-for-4 in a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. Pages, a 23-year-old Cuban prospect, wasted no time making an impression. On the very first pitch he saw—a 91.9 mph fastball in the second inning—he laced an opposite-field single to right and later scored on a hit by Austin Barnes.
Pages' debut came exactly one year after he suffered a significant setback. On May 16, 2023, after being promoted from Double-A Tulsa to Triple-A Oklahoma City, he had his season cut short by a ruptured labrum that required shoulder surgery. His swift return to the majors is a testament to his resilience and the high regard in which the Dodgers hold him.
The Dodgers had eagerly anticipated Pages' promotion, given his track record as one of the top all-around position players in the minors. Known for his potent right-handed bat and versatile outfield defense, Pages has been a standout performer. This season with Oklahoma City, he boasted a .371 batting average, fifteen RBIs, and five home runs in just 15 games.
Pages’ call-up is also a response to the Dodgers' struggles in the outfield. As of Tuesday, center fielders James Outman and Kiké Hernández were each batting just below .190, and right fielder Jason Heyward has been sidelined for two weeks with back soreness. With Heyward's return date still uncertain and the need for a rehabilitation assignment before he can rejoin the lineup, the Dodgers sought a spark elsewhere.
Manager Dave Roberts has indicated that Pages is expected to remain on the roster for at least a few weeks, offering a glimmer of hope for a lineup in need of rejuvenation. Pages’ rapid ascent from injury to Major League debut underscores not only his talent but also the Dodgers’ commitment to integrating promising young players into their plans.
