With the highly anticipated call-up of Triple-A Norfolk’s top prospect, Jackson Holliday, the Baltimore Orioles officially entered their "Holliday time" before Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Positioned at second base and batting ninth, Holliday made an immediate impact in the lineup against Boston starter Kutter Crawford.
Though he had expressed some frustration over a lack of defensive action during Spring Training, Holliday’s excitement for his Major League Baseball debut at Fenway Park was palpable. His debut showcased his skills on both sides of the ball.
In the second inning, Holliday made a sharp defensive play, fielding a ground ball off the bat of Masataka Yoshida and smoothly transitioning the throw to shortstop Gunnar Henderson. The pair completed a slick 4-6-3 double play, highlighting the synergy between MLB Pipeline’s current top overall prospect and a former top prospect.
The Orioles emerged victorious with a 7-5 win, propelled by Jordan Westburg’s crucial three-run homer in the seventh inning. While Holliday went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, he still made a contribution. In the sixth inning, he grounded out to second base, which allowed Colton Cowser to score from third and narrow Boston’s lead to 5-3. This groundout marked Holliday’s first Major League RBI.
Despite not recording a hit, Holliday’s debut was a notable milestone in his burgeoning career, and the young star’s presence was a significant part of Baltimore's victory.
After Brooks Robinson (18 years), Andy Etchebarren (19 years), and Ron Hansen (20 years), Holliday (20 years) became the fourth-youngest player in the club’s history to record an RBI in his MLB debut.
Prior to Wednesday's game, Holliday was batting .333 (14-for-42) in ten games at Triple-A Norfolk before being called up. So, it might not take long for him to start delivering for the Orioles.
Holliday has already achieved his first goal. He stated in an MLB Network interview on July 17, 2022, the day he was selected by the Orioles, that he wanted to make it into the big leagues in two years. That he did accomplish.
