Following an 0-5 start to the season, scoring only 11 total runs, the New York Mets have since gone 10-3 and appear to be the toughest team to beat in baseball. Many Met faithful believed they would be in for a long year after the struggling start, but over the past two weeks, many minds have switched narratives. The Mets now rest 0.5 games back of the Braves who sit atop the NL East.
In these 13 games, their run differential is an astounding +27, tying the Kansas City Royals for the best run differential in the MLB in the same stretch. The offensive presence has been what has lifted the Metropolitans to this high run differential. Among MLB ranks since April 5th, the Mets have the highest on base percentage, (.358), second highest batting average (.280), and fourth highest slugging, (.435).
The X-Factor? Tyrone Taylor. While stars like Pete Alonso and Starling Marte have been hefty contributions, no one has been as hot at the plate as Taylor. After spending his entire career in Milwaukee in a rather overcrowded outfield, the 30-year-old has gotten adjusted to his new home rather quickly. In the 10-3 stretch, he is slashing .407/.414/.593. Taylor not only has been the hottest bat within the streak, but was also the reason why the streak kicked off in the first place by lacing a walk off single down the left field line scoring Brett Baty to earn their first win of the season.
With the offense taking most of the headlines, you can't start to forget about the arms. In the same stretch of time, the Mets have the fourth best team era at 3.57, while also having the third most strikeouts at 117. Most of the success has been discovered in the bullpen with 2x Reliever of the Year Edwin Díaz leading the way.
It is still early in the year, and there are 162 games for a reason, but the Queen's City is loving what they're seeing from the blue and orange.
