The New York Mets season has been a roller coaster of events, with the team having gone up and down this season more than any other club in the MLB. On June 12th, the Mets were on one of their lows when an unexpected "hero" threw out the first pitch at Citi Field.
Following the famous fast food mascot's pitch, the Mets offense would have a breakout game. The team would score ten runs, trouncing the Miami Marlins 10-4. The next day, the orange and blue offense seemed to be back to their old tricks, entering the ninth inning down 2-1 with only two hits recorded That was, until 35-year-old J.D Martinez hit his first career walk off home run, sending the fans home happy and wrapping up a series win over Miami.
Ever since this series, the Mets have been red hot. In seven games since Grimace's appearance, the Mets have hit for a .314 average with an OPS of .920 as a team, as well as an ERA of 2.86. The team even collected their most hits in a single game since 2019 with 22 in a 14-2 rout of the defending world series champion Texas Rangers.
The team has started to become aware of the viral internet memes. After the game on Monday, SNY reporter Steve Gelbs asked Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo about the “Grimace effect."
“He definitely correlates with us going on this run,” Nimmo said. “If that's what you want to attribute it to, then I’m all for it."
Nimmo continued to state that the team not only has to hold each other accountable, but they need to have fun as well.
“We all grew up with this being a kid’s game. I think that’s a lot of fun adding Grimace to this. So I’m all for it.”
The most recent of the Mets games came last night in a 7-6 thriller. Down 6-2 in the sixth, the Mets rallied back to steal one from Texas.
Brandon Nimmo got the comeback party started with a solo home run in the sixth inning, cutting the Rangers lead to just three. Shortly after came a failed attempt by Texas to turn a double play on a Francisco Lindor ground ball, resulting in another run.
Fast forwarding to the top of the eighth, after a hard-fought battle with former Mets reliever David Robertson, young catcher Francisco Alvarez sent a well struck double into the left field gap. This would tie the game at six a piece, leaving the crowd in Arlington stunned. The final blow was a one-run double rocketed down the left field line by first baseman Pete Alonso to put the Mets on top.
In the bottom of the ninth, Edwin Diaz would force a double play, followed up by a fly out to shallow left field, closing out on possibly the best win of the year for the Metropolitans.

The "Amazin’s" will attempt to keep their hot streak alive as they look for a sweep of the Texas Rangers tonight at 8:05pm EST.
The question now? How long until the “Grimace Magic” runs out? Only time will tell.
