10. Tyler Stephenson
2024 Stats: .258/.338/.444, 19 HR, 66 RBI (138 G)
2024 Accolades: N/A
Coming in at No.10 is Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson. In a solid 2024 season, Stephenson ranked highly among catchers in the majors with a .258 batting average (4th), a .338 on-base percentage (2nd) and a .782 OPS (3rd). Additionally, Stephenson heavily improved his OPS+ from 85 in 2023 to 112 in 2024. While no single statistic may take first, Stephenson's consistency across numerous offensive categories establishes him as a reliable, all-around hitting catcher.
9. Shea Langeliers
2024 Stats: .224/.288/.450, 29 HR, 80 RBI (137 G)
2024 Accolades: Silver Slugger Finalist
In the 2024 season, Shea Langeliers surpassed his 2023 performance in nearly every statistic. He hit the second most home runs among catchers with 29, posted a .450 slugging percentage (3rd) and ranked fifth in RBI (80). Although he improved from a .205 average in 2023 to .224 in 2024, Langeliers continues to grapple with a strikeout problem. The Athletics haven't had a Silver Slugger winner since Eric Chavez in 2002. If Langeliers can improve his batting average while maintaining his power, he could not only become the first Athletic to win a Silver Slugger Award since Chavez, but also the first catcher in franchise history to do so.
8. J.T. Realmuto
2024 Stats: .266/.322/.429, 14 HR, 47 RBI (99 G)
2024 Accolades: Silver Slugger Finalist
Playing in the fewest number of games in a season in his career since 2012 (excluding the shortened 2020 season), J.T. Realmuto experienced an inconsistent 2024 campaign. Despite the struggles, Realmuto still finished as a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award. Although his 99 games don't place him as a qualified catcher, his numbers among qualified catchers would stand competitive. Among National League catchers, Realmuto would rank second with a .266 batting average and fourth with a .429 on-base percentage. At 33 years old and entering his 12th season, Realmuto is hoping for a healthy year as he approaches the back end of his career.
7. Patrick Bailey
2024 Stats: .234/.298/.339, 8 HR, 46 RBI (121 G)
2024 Accolades: Gold Glove Winner
Patrick Bailey became the first Giants catcher to win a Gold Glove since Hall of Famer Buster Posey. Per Baseball Savant, Bailey's defensive percentile rankings are some of the best among catchers: Pop Time (97th percentile), Caught Stealing Above Average (98th percentile), Framing (100th percentile) and Fielding Run Value (100th percentile). While his batting stats may not leap off the page, slashing just .234/.298/.339, Bailey is establishing himself as one of the best defensive catchers in the majors at just 25 years old.
6. Yainer Diaz
2024 Stats: .299/.325/.441, 16 HR, 84 RBI (148 G)
2024 Accolades: Silver Slugger Finalist
In just his second full season in the majors, Yainer Diaz made a significant offensive impact by leading all catchers with a .299 batting average, 18 points higher than the next closest player, William Contreras. Diaz's impressive offensive season include a .441 slugging percentage, .325 on-base percentage and 84 RBI, ranking him second among American League catchers in each category. At just 26 years old, Diaz is showing immense promise as one of the best young offensive catchers in the game.
5. Adley Rutschman
2024 Stats: .250/.318/.391, 19 HR, 79 RBI (148 G)
2024 Accolades: All-Star Starter
Adley Rutschman's 2024 season began strong, positioning himself as one of the top catchers in the game by the All-Star break — shown by being named the All-Star starting catcher in the American League. He posted a .275 batting average, hit 16 home runs and tallied 59 RBI in 90 games by the All-Star break. However, the back end of the season saw a significant decline in his performance. Rutschman batted just .207 with three home runs and 20 RBI over 58 games. His on-base percentage also dropped to .318 on the season, 56 points lower than his 2023 mark. Despite the late-season slump, Rutschman's potential has shone as the age of just 26 years old.
4. Salvador Perez
2024 Stats: .271/.330/.456, 27 HR, 104 RBI (158 G)
2024 Accolades: All-Star Reserve, Silver Slugger Winner
Salvador Perez has established himself as one of the most consistent hitting catchers in the majors. He has hit over 20 home runs for the eighth consecutive season, excluding 2019 when he missed the entire season due to injury, and 2020 when only 60 games were played due to the COVID pandemic. Leading all catchers with 104 RBI, Perez's Silver Slugger-winning season was notable not just for his power — hitting 27 home runs, the third most among catchers — but also for his overall offensive improvement. His on-base percentage of .330 was the third highest in his career, with the other two seasons being his first year (just 39 games played) and the 2020 season (just 37 games played). As he approaches his 14th season in the majors at 34 years old, the seasoned veteran still continues to be one of the best in the game.
3. Cal Raleigh
2024 Stats: .220/.312/.436, 34 HR, 100 RBI (153 G)
2024 Accolades: Gold Glove Winner, Platinum Glove Winner, Silver Slugger Finalist
In 2024, Cal Raleigh became just the third catcher in MLB history to win the Platinum Glove, and the first player in Mariners history earn the honor. Offensively, Raleigh led all catchers in home runs with 34 and topped the American League in walks with 70. He was the only catcher in 2024 to achieve 30 home runs and 100 RBI, despite batting just .220. If Raleigh can address his strikeout issues, he has the potential to become the best catcher in baseball.
2. Will Smith
2024 Stats: .248/.327/.433, 20 HR, 75 RBI (128 G)
2024 Accolades: All-Star Reserve, Gold Glove Finalist, Silver Slugger Finalist
Will Smith secured his second World Series championship in just his sixth year in the majors this season with the Dodgers. He also extended his All-Star streak to two consecutive seasons, earning a spot on the National League All-Star roster. Although Smith didn't take home any hardware, he was the only catcher in the majors to be a finalist for both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards, while also making the All-Star game. Playing in just 128 games — dealing with a broken rib, as well as getting a concussion in the same season — a healthy 2025 could see Smith walk away with the hardware in his hands.
1. William Contreras
2024 Stats: .281/.365/.466, 23 HR, 92 RBI (155 G)
2024 Accolades: All-Star Starter, Silver Slugger Winner
William Contreras is coming off his second consecutive season winning the Silver Slugger Award. When comparing Contreras to other catchers' offensive ranks, he nearly tops them all. He posted a .831 OPS, leading all catchers, and sitting 45 points higher than the next closest, Salvador Perez. He also led all catchers with 37 doubles, 78 walks and nine stolen bases. Among National League catchers, he drove in the most runs (92), hit the most home runs (23) and had the highest batting average (.281). In a season where he finished fifth in the NL MVP race, as well as started in his first All-Star game, Contreras comfortably holds the No. 1 spot.
