Before the season opener in South Korea against the Padres, Shohei Ohtani was solely focused on his role as the Dodgers' designated hitter. However, that focus is set to shift as he prepares to take the first steps toward resuming throwing when the team returns to Los Angeles this weekend.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced on Monday that Ohtani will begin a throwing program once the team is back in the U.S. following the Seoul Series. Despite this, Roberts emphasized that Ohtani will not pitch in 2024. The Dodgers are cautious about rushing him back to the mound, especially after his second major surgery on his right elbow in September. Roberts expressed uncertainty about Ohtani's ability to contribute on the mound this season, acknowledging that his throwing program will be a critical factor in determining his future role.
While pitching is off the table for this year, Ohtani might see time in the outfield if needed later in the season. His progress during the throwing program and the team's needs will influence whether he takes on an outfield role. For now, it's early days, and any potential return will hinge on Ohtani's readiness and willingness to play.

With Shohei Ohtani sidelined from pitching in 2024, the Dodgers needed to fill a fifth spot in their rotation. After an impressive spring, Gavin Stone has been chosen to step into that role.
Stone made a compelling case during the Cactus League, posting a stellar 0.93 ERA over three appearances. His final showcase on Monday was particularly notable, as he tossed 3 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts against eleven batters faced, demonstrating his readiness for a major league role.
The Dodgers’ rotation will now feature Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Bobby Miller, James Paxton, and Stone. Clayton Kershaw is also expected to rejoin the team later this summer, adding further depth to an already formidable lineup.
While there’s still much to be decided over the course of the season, the potential for success looks promising. The Dodgers are eagerly anticipating Ohtani’s return, which, when it happens, will significantly enhance their pitching staff for the 2025 season.
