As the month comes to an end, it's time to look at the top talents in the MLB from both sides of the ball. These players were honored for their stellar performances in the month of May.
AL Player of the Month: Aaron Judge - New York Yankees
Facing constant struggles at the plate to start the year, Aaron Judge has turned his season around. Judge’s numbers in May were truly ground-breaking, slashing 361/.479/.918 with 27 RBI. This impressive feat earned Judge his seventh AL Player of the Month Award of his career. His consistent excellence continues to solidify his status as one of the best players in the MLB, carving a path to towards another possible MVP season.
NL Player of the Month: Bryce Harper - Philadelphia Phillies
Harper was an offensive juggernaut in May, leading all National League batters with a .990 OPS. The left-hander also topped the National League in home runs (7) and RBI (24). Harper's consistent performance at the plate and ability to deliver in clutch situations is why he is still looked at as a premier hitter in the league. His phenomenal May is one of the center-stage reasons why the Phillies sit atop the MLB with a 42-19 record.
AL Pitcher of the Month: Luis Gil - New York Yankees
Luis Gil had some rather high expectations when being added to the Yankees rotation, but not many could expect the start the rookie is having to his MLB career. The 26-year-old just delivered one of the best pitching months in franchise history, recording the seventh-lowest ERA (0.70) by a Yankees pitcher in one month. Gil totaled a 6-0 record with 44 strikeouts in the month of May. The right-hander's dominance on the mound has been a key factor in the Yankees' recent success, providing a boost to starting rotation.

NL Pitcher of the Month: Chris Sale - Atlanta Braves
Chris Sale has returned to his "old self" this season. Not only has Sale's production improved drastically compared to previous seasons, but he has been phenomenal in stepping up for Spencer Strider since his season ending right elbow surgery. The left-hander finished May with a perfect 5-0 record, a 0.56 ERA, and an astounding 45-2 K/BB ratio. If Sale can continue to have a strong 2024, a Comeback Player of the Year Award, and even possibly a Cy Young could be in sight for the veteran.
AL Reliever of the Month: Emmanuel Clase - Cleveland Guardians
Emmanuel Clase earned his fifth Reliever of the Month Award of his career. Only Edwin Díaz (8) and Josh Hader (6) have more since the award was created in 2017. In his thirteen appearances in May, the 26-year-old earned a save in nine of them, allowing zero runs and giving up only four total hits. Clase's ability to provide trustworthy outings makes him arguably the best reliever in the league.
NL Reliever of the Month: Robert Suarez - San Diego Padres
Suarez has excelled in his role as the Padres new closer, proving to be the new staple closing arm in San Diego since Josh Hader's departure. The right-hander was perfect in May, converting all seven of his save opportunities. He concluded the month with a stellar 0.73 ERA, striking out 13 batters in 12 1/3 innings pitched. Suarez's impressive performances have been a key factor in stabilizing the Padres bullpen this season.
AL Rookie of the Month: Luis Gil - New York Yankees
Luis Gil knocked two birds with one stone after being named both the AL Rookie of the Month and the AL Pitcher of the Month. Digging deeper into his May statistics, Gil held opponents to a .109 batting average in his 38 2/3 innings pitched. Gil’s exceptional performances not only showcase his talent, but also emphasize the bright future ahead with the Yankees.
NL Rookie of the Month: Joey Ortiz - Milwaukee Brewers
Included in the trade package the Orioles sent to the Brewers for ace pitcher Corbin Burnes, Joey Ortiz has made an immediate impact during his time in Milwaukee. The rookie posted impressive numbers in May, slashing .307/.391/.587. His .978 OPS ranked second among National League players in May, only trailing Player of the Month Bryce Harper.
