On Wednesday, December 6, the San Diego Padres sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees in a blockbuster deal that shook the MLB community. With the departure of the power hitting lefty, and the Los Angeles Dodgers acquiring the undebatable best player in baseball, Shohei Ohtani, the "Slam Diego" run seems to be approaching an end sooner rather than later. After what has been a mix of disappointing regular seasons and falling short in the playoffs for the past couple of years, the rebuild window in southern California is about painted shut.
The departure of Soto isn't the only big name expected to leave San Diego this offseason. 2x Cy Young winner Blake Snell, and 3x NL reliver of the year Josh Hader are both rumored to be moved by the 2024 season as well. Paying the big contracts between all stars such as Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, and Fernando Tatis Jr. a whopping 970-million-dollars, it makes it nearly impossible to bring back both a 2023 Cy Young winner and a top closing arm.Â

Via ESPN, Snell is estimated to make roughly 25-million-dollars a year in his upcoming deal. With Snell being 31 and healthier than ever, it will be no shock to see a contract anywhere between 5-7 years. Top destination rumors for the left-hander have been a wide variety of teams, with the Boston Red Sox being the constant within those groups. The Red Sox ended the 2023 season with a 78-84 record, as well as the 10th worst team ERA in baseball with a 4.52, placing them dead last in the AL East.
The departure of now World Series champion Nathan Eovaldi was a big loss for Boston, as it made that already thin starting rotation significantly thinner. With the possible acquisition of Snell, that solidified ace in the rotation would be reclaimed. However though, with the competitiveness of everyone this offseason, it won't be a surprise to see bigger market teams such as the Phillies, Dodgers and Giants to make an aggressive push of their own.
Flipping over to the caboose of the Padres pitching staff, left-handed gun slinger Josh Hader is expected to be moved as well. With Edwin Diaz recently getting a 5 year, 102-million-dollar contract, Hader is expected to surpass that.

The destination name swirling around for the all-star is the Texas Rangers. Former Kansas City Royal Aroldis Chapman filled in those shoe's mid-way through last year in a trade-deadline acquisition. Posting an impressive 2.25 ERA in the postseason, being a key reason to the World Series run. The Rangers, however, are looking for someone even better. The addition of Hader and starting pitcher Jacob deGrom hopefully being able to stay healthy in the 2024 season, will make this Rangers ballclub even between then the World Series team.
Overall, with the NL West consisting of the National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks, and the arguably best offensive lineup in all of baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres are looking as if third place in the division is all they will be able to reach in 2024.
