The 2024 Home Run Derby showcased a stellar mix of emerging talent and seasoned sluggers, all adapting to new regulations. The night was marked by towering home runs that lit up the Texas sky, culminating in an unexpected yet thrilling victory for Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández.
Hernández clinched his first Derby title by defeating rising star Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals in a gripping final round. This marked Hernández's debut in the Home Run Derby, and he made history as the first Dodger to win the coveted trophy.
Before this event, Hernández had only one home run at Globe Life Field. However, he stunned the audience by smashing 49 homers in a single night. Amidst the roaring cheers, Hernández enjoyed memorable moments with friends and teammates, exemplifying the camaraderie and excitement of the evening.
Dodgers third-base coach Dino Ebel served as Hernández's pitcher. Hernández's first long ball of the night was an impressive 466-foot blast into left field, clocking in at 108 mph according to Statcast. It set the tone for the evening as his longest hit. At the 1:30 mark of his turn, Hernández had already sent five more balls into the stands before taking a timeout.
During the break, Hernández's teammates provided him with water and a towel, a moment of respite that reflected the supportive atmosphere. Even players from the American League, including Toronto first baseman and 2023 Derby winner Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Yankees slugger Juan Soto, and Shohei Ohtani, showed their support. Guerrero, donning a No. 37 Blue Jays Hernández jersey, offered advice that Hernández took to heart.
Following their guidance, Hernández's performance soared. He ended his regular time with seven home runs and added six more in the bonus round, with his 19 home runs averaging 430 feet and 97.3 mph at the plate.
In the semifinal, Hernández faced Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm. After a slow start with only three home runs before his timeout, Hernández found his rhythm again, finishing with 11 points in regular time and adding three more in the bonus round for a total of 14. Guerrero's encouragement proved vital during these tense moments.
Bohm also managed 14 home runs, necessitating a swing-off to break the tie. Hernández excelled, going 2-for-3, which surpassed Bohm's single hit, propelling him to the final round against Witt Jr.
In the final showdown, Hernández set the pace with eight of his 14 home runs traveling over 425 feet. Witt Jr. responded with a commendable 11 homers in regular time but fell just short in the extra time, securing Hernández's victory.
As the evening drew to a close, Guerrero handed Hernández the championship pendant, symbolizing his hard-fought triumph. Hernández's performance, marked by resilience, skill, and a touch of surprise, made the 2024 Home Run Derby an unforgettable spectacle.
