Star outfielder Mookie Betts is switching positions for the second time this offseason, possibly a first for him.
The Dodgers announced in December that the six-time Gold Glove Award winner will permanently move from right field to second base. At the time, many agreed this decision made a lot of sense, even though it was unexpected. It turns out that there was still a much more unexpected move to come.
Nearly a month into Spring Training, manager Dave Roberts announced that Betts will take over as his starting shortstop due to Gavin Lux's continued defensive issues. Lux will now be moved back to second base.
Although Betts can accomplish almost anything on the field, this wasn't precisely the plan, as shown by the fact that it occurred so late in the spring and that it hasn't been done very often in the course of modern baseball history. How might it appear, though? He only played shortstop for a short amount of time in the beginning half of last season, but even so, his 98 innings and 46 plays don't give us much to go on.

Not all shortstops are known for their amazing plays, and Betts isn't often one of those shortstops. The actual concern is how many of the regular plays he can make; the likelihood of success is extremely slim when we consider plays that are deemed 90% probable or higher, which are plays that a regular shortstop gets to see hundreds of times a year.
In any case, it's not likely that Betts will start all 162 games at shortstop since light-hitter Miguel Rojas nonetheless has a strong glove. Although the Dodgers can always move Betts to second base and use Chris Taylor, Miguel Rojas, or Kiké Hernandez at shortstop, they prefer to have Lux's hitting in the order. If Lux's throwing challenges keep him from being able to play second base, however, Betts might still end up back on the right side with Rojas or a future trade acquisition at shortstop.
It will be interesting to see how the Dodgers ballclub handles this change and what is expected to come for the players.
