It is rumored that today the unanimous best player in the MLB right now, Shohei Ohtani, will have announced who he will be playing for in the 2024 MLB season. It's roughly 7:00pmEST and there is still no decision. So, where will he go and when?!
The first way you have to look at this is what will his contract look like, and what team would be willing to pay that. With those questions in mind, team names such as the Dodgers and Mets jump out on the paper. With the Mets chasing after Japanese superstar Yoshinobu Yamamoto, they seem to be out of the mix of big market teams, leaving the Dodgers as the top dog.
It has been a trend recently in Major League Baseball for big name players to get a lengthy, high paying contract. Most recent examples include New York Yankees outfielder, 2022 AL MVP, Aaron Judge who signed a nine year, 360-million-dollar contract, and 2023 World Series Champion shortstop Corey Seager who signed a 10 year, 325-million-dollar contract. For Ohtani however, his contract is expected to be drastically larger, being the highest-paying contract in baseball history.
When discussing contract value, something to keep in mind is that he will not be pitching at all in the 2024 season. Due to his recent elbow surgery in September, it will just be the bat that a team will be getting this upcoming season. Now calling it "just the bat" is not to be taken lightly. Last year, Ohtani slashed .304/.412/.654. As well as having 44 homeruns, 95 runs batted in, 20 stolen bases, and an OPS of 1.066. With the slight roadblock in mind, it could put a slight dent in his overall contract, but it shouldn't affect it too much. My estimate for his contract will be around 10-12 years for around 600-700 million.
The two-time MVP was reportedly traveling to Toronto today, but then more news broke revealing it wasn't him on the private jet, rather it was Canadian businessman Robert Herjavec. The most recent update is that Ohtani is still in Southern California. But again, who knows where this guy is. Toronto reporter Devin Heroux is having quite the day.
I won't be shocked to see if this becomes a Craig Counsell situation to where everyone feels like they know where he's going, or at least the top three teams, and then he lands somewhere else. My prediction, however, is the Los Angeles Dodgers on a 11 year, 660-million-dollar contract. With the contract being 11 years, his last year on the deal will be when he turns 40 years old. Adding this dual threat will one-hundred percent make the Dodgers the top World Series contender.
As of now, no one knows where in the world he is, and what rumors are actually true. All we know is that his contract is going to make a boom for Major League Baseball.
