On Saturday night the San Francisco Giants’ ownership responded to comments regarding the team’s 2025 payroll concerns by making a bold move. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Giants have agreed to a seven-year, $182 million contract with shortstop Willy Adames, widely regarded as one of the top offensive players available this winter outside of Juan Soto.
Throughout his career, Adames has shown consistent improvement, making him an impactful addition to San Francisco. This significant move marks the first major decision by new president of baseball operations, former Buster Posey. The contract, $15 million more than the previous franchise record held by Posey himself, is a landmark moment for the Giants. Offering the largest deal in team history signals a strong vote of confidence in the new front office and their vision for the organization’s future.
The Giants have experienced the effect that Adames can bring to a ballclub, and his clutch play he brings to a roster.
While Adames isn’t without flaws, his status as one of the best shortstops in the majors is undeniable. Last season, he posted a .251/.331/.462 slash line with a 118 OPS+, 112 RBI and 32 homeruns, making a strong case as one of the best shortstops in the National League.
San Francisco hopes his power translates well to Oracle Park and that he can reduce his strikeouts. Despite these areas for improvement, Adames is poised to be a valuable asset in the Giants’ lineup.
