The Milwaukee Brewers finally shook off their early season struggles on Tuesday, defeating the Kansas City Royals 5-0. The win was a needed turning point after the worst start in franchise history since 2011.
Rookie pitcher Chad Patrick started for Milwaukee in just his second ever MLB game and first ever start. After Milwaukee allowed 24 runs during the first three innings of their previous games, Patrick stepped up, blanking Kansas City over three innings to provide Milwaukee with some much-needed stability. While he didn’t pitch deep enough to earn the win, coming up just one out shy, Patrick's outing — 4.2 innings with five strikeouts, three hits and three walks — set the tone for the game.
The Brewers’ offense came to life with an urgency that had been missing so far this season. Batting from the ninth spot, Eric Haase sparked the bats with a solo home run in the third inning. Following Haase, Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio added singles, with Turang crossing the plate on Christian Yelich's fielder's choice to make it 2-0.
In the sixth inning, Rhys Hoskins contributed to the offense, driving in a run during a two-out rally that extended the lead to 4-0. Then came Yelich’s exclamation point — a 429-foot home run in the eighth inning that capped the scoring at 5-0.
Milwaukee's bullpen took it from there, demonstrating depth and precision under pressure. Abner Uribe earned the win with four pivotal outs, while Joel Payamps and Trevor Megill shut down Kansas City in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to seal the deal.
