The Milwaukee Brewers called up their No. 21 ranked prospect, infielder Caleb Durbin on Thursday. Durbin was acquired from the New York Yankees in the trade that sent Devin Williams to New York and returned Durbin and left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. The Brewers brought Durbin up due to the recent struggles of Oliver Dunn, after Dunn hit just .167 in 14 games with Milwaukee in the young season.
The five-foot-seven Durbin has had a very interesting career. In 2021, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round of the first-year player draft. He was drafted out of Division III Washington University in Missouri where he played in three seasons, picking up 141 hits, 52 extra-base hits, 89 RBI, 113 stolen bases and a slash line of .386/.477/.608. He was the centerpiece of a trade between Atlanta and New York that sent relief pitcher Lucas Luetge to Atlanta and Durbin to New York.
In 2024, Durbin was quickly promoted after spending just seven games in double-A before becoming a mainstay in triple-A, where he showed exactly why he belonged, picking up 89 hits, 35 extra base hits, 60 RBI, 29 stolen bases and a slash line of .287/.396/.471. Durbin has showcased his defensive versatility playing second base, third base, shortstop, left field and center field in his time in the Minor Leagues. He is a primary third base and second baseman, totaling 474 innings and just three errors at the two positions.
It was never a question of if he would be called up, but when. Durbin hasn’t wasted any time at all, picking up his first career hit in his first career at-bat on an infield single. He picked up another hit later on in his debut game. While Durbin could experience some struggles, as most rookies do, he seems in a good position to become one of the premier infielders in today's game.
