After an action-packed Opening Day in Japan on Tuesday, the Dodgers wrapped up the Tokyo Series with a 2-0 sereis sweep against the Cubs at the Tokyo Dome.
Game 1: For the first time ever, two Japanese-born starting pitchers squared off on Opening Day: Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shota Imanaga. Yamamoto came out on top, allowing just one run over five innings. Despite some control struggles, Imanaga managed to keep the Dodgers’ hitters quiet, walking four and striking out two in four scoreless innings.
The Dodgers’ bullpen then stole the show. After Ian Happ's single in the third, the Cubs only managed one more baserunner — a hit-by-pitch. Anthony Banda, Ben Casparius, Blake Treinen and Tanner Scott, who earned the save in his Dodgers debut, combined for four hitless, scoreless innings to lock down the opener.
The reigning World Series champions' offense finally broke through in the fifth inning. Shohei Ohtani’s single to right field brought Andy Pages home after he’d walked earlier in the inning. Tommy Edman then tied the game with an RBI single to left, and Teoscar Hernandez scored Ohtani with a fielder’s choice. Hernandez later came around on a Will Smith single, thanks to a throwing error, giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead.
In the ninth, with a two-run cushion, Ohtani smashed a double into the right-field corner and advanced to third on Edman’s groundout. Hernandez came through with his second RBI of the game, singling to left to make it 4-1, sealing the Dodgers’ season opener victory.
Game 2: On Wednesday, the Tokyo Series wrapped up with the Dodgers’ sweep of the Cubs. In his MLB debut, Roki Sasaki showed flashes of talent but struggled with command, issuing five walks in three innings while allowing just one run. Nervousness may have played a role, as only 25 of his 56 pitches were strikes. Still, he escaped a bases-loaded jam in his final inning to keep the Dodgers in the game.
The Dodgers jumped ahead in the second inning with Will Smith walking and advancing to third on a Max Muncy double. Carson Kelly’s errant throw allowed the Dodgers to score, and Kiké Hernández added another run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Later, Tommy Edman, Kiké Hernández, and Shohei Ohtani homered in the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead to 6-2 and completing their season-opening sweep in Japan.
The Dodgers now return home to Los Angeles, riding high after their undefeated start and ready for what promises to be an exciting season.
